Connectivity

Dual-personality functionality: 48 auto-sensing 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 ports with “IEEE AutoMDI/MDI-X

  • Four dual-personality ports—either the auto sensing 10/100/1000Base-TRJ-45 or the mini-GBIC can be used for each port.

  • Four 10-GbE ports: Two fixed CX4 ports and two X2 transceiver bayswhich support a variety of transceivers providing connectivity to otherswitch boxes, to a 10-GbE concentrator, or to any Ethernet compatibleuplink.

  • An auxiliary port that is reserved for future development.

  • The switches can be connected to a HPE ProCurve 620 RPS/EPS and receiveredundant system power from that unit. If the internal power supply inthe switch fails, the RPS/EPS unit will immediately provide all the powernecessary to keep the switch running.

  • Plug-and-play networking—all ports are enabled—just connect thenetwork cables to active network devices and your switched network isoperational.

  • IEEE 802.3ab Auto MDI/MDI-X on all 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports, meaningthat all connections can be made using straight-through twistedpaircables. Cross-over cables are not required, although they will alsowork. The pin operation of each port is automatically adjusted for theattached device: if the switch detects that another switch or hub isconnected to the port, it configures the port as MDI; if the switch detectsthat an end-node device is connected to the port, it configures the port asMDI-X.

Performance

High-performance architecture: 115 Gbp/s switching fabric with up to 74 million pps (Switch 2900-24G) and 173 Gbp/sswitching fabric with up to 110 million pps (Switch 2900-48G)

Selectable queue configurations: increase performance by selecting the number of queues and associated memorybuffering that best meet the requirements of your network applications

Resiliency and high availability

  • IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Protocol (LACP) and HPE ProCurve trunking: support up to 24 trunks, each with up to 8 links(ports) per trunk

  • IEEE 802.1s Multiple Spanning Tree: provides high link availability in multiple VLAN environments by allowing multiplespanning trees; provides legacy support for IEEE 802.1d and IEEE 802.1w

Layer 2 switching

  • VLAN support and tagging: supports the IEEE 802.1Q (4,096 VLAN IDs) and 256 VLANs simultaneously

  • GARP VLAN Registration Protocol: allows automatic learning and dynamic assignment of VLANs

  • Jumbo frames: on Gigabit and 10-Gigabit ports, allow high-performance remote backup and disaster-recovery services

Layer 3 routing

Basic IP routing: Static IP routing: provides manually configured routing; includes ECMP capability

RIP: provides RIPv1 and RIPv2 routing at media speed

Security

  • NEW USB Secure Autorun (requires HPE ProCurve Manager Plus): deploys, diagnoses, and updates switch using USB flash drive; works with secure credential to prevent tampering

  • Port security: allows access only to specified MAC addresses, which can be learned or specified by the administrator

  • MAC address lockout: prevents configured particular MAC addresses from connecting to the network

  • Multiple user authentication methods:

  • IEEE 802.1X: Industry-standard method of user authentication using an IEEE 802.1X supplicant on the client inconjunction with a RADIUS server

  • Source-port filtering: allows only specified ports to communicate with each other

  • Secure FTP: allows secure file transfer to/from the switch; protects against unwanted file downloads or unauthorized copyingof switch configuration file

  • RADIUS/TACACS+: eases switch management security administration by using a password authentication server

  • Secure Shell (SSHv2): encrypts all transmitted data for secure, remote command-line interface (CLI) access over IP networks

  • Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): encrypts all HTTP traffic, allowing secure access to the browser-based management GUI in theswitch

  • Switch management logon security: can require either RADIUS or TACACS+ authentication for secure switch CLI logon

  • Custom banner: displays security policy when users log in to the switch

Convergence

  • IP multicast snooping and data-driven IGMP: Automatically prevents flooding of IP multicast traffic

  • LLDP-MED (Media Endpoint Discovery): a standard extension of LLDP that stores values for parameters such as QoS andVLAN to automatically configure network devices such as IP phones

  • Software updates: free downloads from the Web

Quality of Service (QoS)

  • Traffic prioritization (IEEE 802.1p): Allows real-time traffic classification into eight priority levels mapped to four queues

  • Class of service (CoS): Sets the IEEE 802.1p priority tag based on IP address, IP Type of Service (ToS), L3 protocol,TCP/UDP port number, source port, and DiffServ

  • Layer 4 prioritization: Enables prioritization based on TCP/UDP port numbers
