The Chopin Year 2010
The 200th anniversary of the greatest polish composer’s – Fryderyk Chopin’s – birth is coming. See events planned in Kujawsko-Pomorskie.

His contribution to the development of world’s romantic music is indisputable. He inspired Robert Schuman, Franz Liszt and was a source of inspiration for generations of polish musicians. His pieces are timeless. The significance of Chopin’s work reaches beyond artistic domain. He has become a legend and his work is close to the hearts of generations.

As Ignacy Jan Paderewski said during the 100th anniversary of Chopin’s birth: “Mickiewicz, Słowacki, Krasicki have all been forbidden. Chopin has never been forbidden. And yet, it is in Chopin’s works that lies everything that has been forbidden: colorful “kontusze”, gold-linen belts, grim “czamarki”, Cracow’s cocked hats, jingle of nobility’s sabers, glitter of peasant’s scythes, moan of a wounded chest, rebellion of the hobbled spirit, cemetery crosses, village churches, prayers of caring hearts, pain of captivity, longing for freedom, curses of the tyrants and joyous song of victory (…)”.
The Chopin Year is a great opportunity for promotion of polish art and culture. It is an opportunity of promotion of our national heritage. On the 1st of March 2010 thousands of tourists interested in the work of Mozart’s disciple will come to Poland. We have the obligation to fulfill their expectations. We owe it to all the generations to which Chopin’s music together with the works of Mickiewicz, Słowacki,and Matejko had been the only bastion of the national identity, an inspiration for casting away of the braces of captivity.

The main investment of the anniversary is the opening of the Fryderyk Chopin’s museum in the Ostrogscy Castle on Tamka. This exquisite project may easily become the new flagship of the capital. It is supposed to be a magnificent building – one of a few in the world of such high degree of technological advancement. Thanks to strenuous effort there are good chances of realization of the project. The renovation works are being concluded and a renown Italian architectural atelier Migliore + Servetto Architetti Associati are designing the project of the multimedia exposition.

The artist’s birthplace – Żelazowa Wola – is being thoroughly renovated and will become a true crown jewel. The renovation of the Brochów church, where the composer had been baptized, has been concluded.

A series of concerts entitled “Chopin in the Capitals of Europe” has been planned. The concerts will take place in Paris, London, Prague, Vienna and Berlin. The challenges related to globalization force the managers of the events to underline the artist’s local background. Chopin was a great European but most of all he was a great Pole. We must recall his roots. Chopin Institute has become a producer of the musical events during EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.

A large guidebook called “Chopin’s Europe” is being prepared. It will cover places composer had visited. We cordially invite you to visit a series of concerts held in the artist’s memory, which will take place in February and March of 2010 in Warsaw. The most accomplished pianists will participate. Among them are Martha Argerich and possibly Maurizio Pollini and Christian Zimerman. Young and talented artist will be given the opportunity to present themselves during 16th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition.
